Getting ready for Parapans!!!

I’m just days away from the start of my biggest Boccia adventure yet, the 2011 Para Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.  Although this is a smaller event from a “Boccia point of view”, it’s a bigger stage from an overall point of view.  This will be my first major multi-sport games, and I’m very excited to be part of a broader Team Canada.

Me and Trish (my sports assistant) in our new CPC "podium jackets"

Training has been going well (with the exception of a small cold last week), and with only a handful of on-court sessions left, focus on mental training and preparations become more important.  This competition has only individual play (no Team/Pair play).  Of the 12 BC1s registered, I’m ranked #6, but there’s many athletes not yet ranked (this is their first international competition), and many athletes to be classified (including myself, but I don’t see my own classification changing).

The registered BC1 athletes are:
Country        Class    Name        Surname    Int Ranking
Argentina    BC1    Ibarbure    Mauricio    16
Mexico        BC1    Ventura        Eduardo    17
USA        BC1    Hawker        Timothy    20
Canada        BC1    Richardson    Brock    26
Brazil        BC1    Chagas        José Carlos    36
Canada        BC1    Smith-Wrothylake Keven    48
Columbia    BC1    Henao        Eliana    64
Argentina    BC1    Villano        Gabriela    66
Brazil        BC1    Deiverson    Lenon    NR
USA        BC1    Johnson    Kenneth    NR
Mexico        BC1    Sanchez    Eduardo    NR
Venezuela    BC1    Yendez    Luitze    NR

So, IF (notice the boldness on that, I expect some minor changes) everything holds through classification and format, the BC1 pools would be (NR athletes are randomly draw into pools):

Pool A:

Argentina BC1 Ibarbure Mauricio 16
Canada BC1 Smith-Wrothylake Keven 48
Columbia BC1 Henao Eliana 64
A NR athlete BC1 ??? ????? NR

Pool B:

Mexico BC1 Ventura Eduardo 17
Brazil BC1 Chagas José Carlos 36
Argentina BC1 Villano Gabriela 66
A NR athlete BC1 ??? ????? NR

Pool C:

USA BC1 Hawker Timothy 20
Canada BC1 Richardson Brock 26
A NR athlete BC1 ??? ????? NR
A NR athlete BC1 ??? ????? NR

The word is that they will be taking 4 athletes into the knockout rounds (semi-finals, & finals), so it’ll be the 3 pool winners & the best 2nd place finisher.  A pretty deep cut, but “it is what it is”.  I’m pretty confident that if I’m playing the way I know I can, I can beat anyone there.  So playing with a calm confidence will be key to my success.

I leave Monday evening to meet up with a crew from Toronto.  Then we leave Tuesday for Guadalajara (via a 5 hour layover in Atlanta)!

The basic schedule is:

  • Nov. 8, Arrive
  • Nov. 9 – 12, Training & Classification
  • Nov. 12, Opening Cememonies
  • Nov. 13 – 15, Boccia Pool Play
  • Nov. 16, Boccia Finals
  • Nov. 17 – 20, Support fellow Canadian athletes and watch other sports (and maybe some pool time 🙂 )
  • Nov. 21, Depart for home

In terms of keeping track of my progress, I hope to get a chance to update this blog daily.  Other links to watch are:
